Two men waling down the street in Mea Shearim. Mea Shearim remains an Old World enclave in the heart of Jerusalem. The overwhelmignly Haredi population has preserved the traditional ways of life that existed for centuries among the Orthodox Jews of Eastern Europe. Life revolves around disciplined adherence to Jewish law, prayer and the study of Jewish texts. The residents follow strict dress and speech customs deriving from 17th century ghettos. Mea Shearim was established in 1874 as the second settlement outside the walls of the Old City.
